When Cheltenham’s Christ College got involved with the centennial recreation of the Gloucestershire Historical Pageant, three of their students jumped at the chance to write about the experience.

The pageant took place on and around Pittville Boating Lake in 1908, and Christ College bell boats took to the water to mark the event.

Cheltenham Local History Society offered prizes for the best article, and twins Evie and Melanie Townsend together with Jade Stockwell were presented with a gift voucher and a certificate by Cheltenham Spa Town Crier, Ken Brightwell, at their local history afternoon at St Andrew’s church.

The Mayor of Cheltenham, Councillor Robin MacDonald and his wife, the Mayoress Rosemary MacDonald who were so impressed by the students’ article that they asked for a signed copy.

Christ College Sports Centre Manager Dave Potts said, “I’m really proud of the girls. Their article really captured the spirit of the original event, as well as showing that a day on the lake is as enjoyable as it’s ever been.

“They have also been the most wonderful ambassadors for the school - well done to them all, and thanks to Cheltenham Local History Society for making it possible.”
