      <title>Pastoral Letter</title>
      <itunes:author>Clifton Diocese</itunes:author>
<itunes:subtitle>Bishop Declan's Pastoral Letter for the Feast of the Holy Family</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>You may have seen a survey carried out just before Christmas showing that a number of people were uncertain concerning the details of the Christmas story. Some people didn’t know where Jesus was born. Others were unsure as to where Joseph took Mary and Jesus when they fled from Bethlehem. For many people, Christmas is not so much a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus as a time for families to gather and for presents to be exchanged.

Today, as part of the Christmas story, we celebrate the life of a family – the Holy Family. We celebrate the gift that Joseph, Mary and Jesus were to one another. We celebrate the gift and vocation of parenthood and the gift and vocation to be a child. The family life of Nazareth was not a romantic tale but the reality of the joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments of family life. In the reality of their lives each member of the family was called to enrich the lives of others.

To know that we are a gift to one another and to live that truth is important. Today people often speak and act in such a way that love is distorted and becomes possessive. No one has a right to another person, but all people have a right to life. No one is someone else’s accessory in life because each person has a unique dignity that needs to be respected by all. We are called to have a profound respect for life at all stages and in all circumstances.

Our respect for life should extend to the whole of creation for all life comes from God. To abuse creation is to abuse the Creator. To respect creation is to grow into the mystery of God from whom all life comes and in whom all life is made holy. At Christmas, we celebrate not only the presence of God in the humanity of Jesus, but we recognise that we can discover the presence of God in all that God has made.

The gift of human life is attacked in many ways. Abortion and euthanasia are attacks on individuals when they are in a most vulnerable situation. But the exploitation of peoples lives also occurs through such things as war, terrorism, genocide and abuse of any kind. Racial, cultural and religious prejudice are also attacks on the gift of life. The way in which asylum seekers and refugees are often unjustly treated is an offence against the dignity of their person as too is the human trafficking that takes place in the sex industry. Only recently we have been made aware that such trafficking is taking place in towns within our own Diocese.

People often find their lives are lived in darkness. But to a people walking in darkness a great light has shone in the person of Christ. His presence brings hope where there is despair. In Him we find the One who loves us, heals us, restores our dignity and enables us to know that we are a gift.

In Christ the whole of creation is made new and there is a peace that is creative between God and humanity, between human beings and between the human family and the rest of creation.

As we look to a New Year, St Paul calls us to be open to the message of Christ in all its richness because it is a message of life and hope. Our homes, communities and parishes should be characterised by sincere compassion, kindness, gentleness, forgiveness and above all love. Then we will know the gift that we are and the value of creation.

I wish you all many blessings during this Christmas season and for 2008.

With my best wishes and prayers
Bishop of Clifton

      <title>Advent Reflection</title>
      <itunes:author>Clifton Diocese</itunes:author>
<itunes:subtitle>Father Robert King, Chaplain to the University of Bristol, has recorded a special reflection for Advent.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>As Advent expectancy prepares to turn into Christmas joy our hopes and sense of anticipation are heightened. We invest so much of ourselves into creating the perfect day and season. An investment that is both human and spiritual. We recognise our desire for joy, peace and reconciliation - if only for a day. Yet such high levels of expectancy can lead to disappointment. As the adage warns: we can't see the wood for the trees. Hope can be dashed if we are too restless to enjoy the season.

Advent is the time when we look forward to Christ's return. A time when we recognise that while our salvation is begun it is yet to be completed. Christ has already become one like us. While we rejoice that Christ has humbled himself to share in our humanity we accept the invitation to share in his divinity. As we await his return, the passing of this world to the fullness of the Kingdom of God, we are called to imitate his example as disciples embracing holiness.

The Gospel challenges us to look for signs of the Kingdom. Experiences of Christ to touch and transform our hearts. Empowering us to share in his prophetic ministry by proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.

If staying awake and being alert to the signs of the Kingdom is the challenge of Advent, taking a moment to enjoy the presence of God is our Christmas task. Allowing the scales to fall from our eyes to experience the beauty and hope of the incarnation is what we are about.

May our hearts be open to grace as we take our place with the shepherds to marvel in awe at God's presence.</itunes:summary>

      <title>Pastoral Letter</title>
      <itunes:author>Clifton Diocese</itunes:author>
      <itunes:subtitle>Bishop Declan's Pastoral Letter for Lent.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ

Why would anyone want to become a Catholic today? In many of our parishes there is an opportunity to find out answers to that question this Easter. There is a large number of people preparing to be baptised or to be received into Full Communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil and to celebrate with us the sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist. Why they have chosen to do this will be a personal choice for each one of them but whatever their reason, each person will be expressing something of their relationship with Christ. They have chosen to continue and develop their relationship with God in and with the Catholic community.

On Wednesday we enter into the season of Lent – a time to take stock and assess our growth in the Christian life. We are called to prayer, fasting and acts of generosity to those in need. Lent is a time for renewal.

In the early days of the Church, the Lenten season was, and still is, a time for the catechumens – those preparing for Baptism. They examined their lives in the light of Christ and asked him to enlighten the areas of darkness and sin they found within themselves. They were conscious not only of their personal lives but whatever was dark or oppressive within society. They knew that to be a Christian was to take responsibility for themselves and also the well being of others.

What was good for the catechumens was soon seen as being good for the whole Christian community. Today the season of Lent is for all the Church. In honesty we recognise where we fall short in our Christian vocation and lifestyle. We all look to see where there is darkness and alienation in our relationship with God, one another and the wider community. We acknowledge our responsibility for the common good and the well being of creation.

We enter into Lent with a seriousness of intent but not a gloomy face. Lent leads to Easter when we celebrate new life and freedom – our new lives, our freedom. These gifts are ours because we have followed Christ more faithfully. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the One who heals the alienation within us. Lent is a time to rediscover our relationship with Christ. Lent is a time to know afresh that we are loved by God who makes all things new and calls us to share in his work of renewal.

At Easter it is not only the newly baptised and those received into Full Communion with the Church who are able to say why they are Catholics, we should all be able to say so. Our answers will be many but all given as an expression of faith arising from a renewed relationship with Christ. In Christ we will be challenged but to who else can we go, because his words are life giving. And his words, his presence is found within the Church, the Body of Christ.

May the season of Lent be a time of new discoveries for us all. May God in Christ continue to uncover his face to us.

With my best wishes and prayers
Bishop of Clifton

<itunes:summary>St James Priory Project is tucked away in a tiny corner of Bristol city centre, just a few steps way from the bus station and busy shopping district of Broadmead. This amazing project works with some of the most vulnerable, challenging and alienated people - those struggling with the devastating illness of addiction.

So the day after celebrating the World Day of the Sick we start our four-part series looking at this local project which helps so many people recover.

Surprisingly, the project is based at the oldest building in the city, but the work done at the priory echoes that of the founding Benedictine monks way back in the twelfth century, namely the provision of care to sick, poor, suffering and vulnerable people. The monks provided the social services of their day as people come to the priory looking for help. And that's what's happening at St James today.

St James Priory Project is rooted in faith and rooted in our society, and our four-part podcast series on this unique place, reflects that. We speak with people going through treatment and recovery as well as those taking their first steps back into the wider community.

In our first episode, St James Priory Project Director, Sue Jotcham gives us an overview of the three elements that make up the project: Walsingham House, St James House, and Bristol's oldest building, St James Priory Church itself - a place where Mass is still celebrated every Sunday. The church is also open every weekday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

In this podcast Sue recounts her own staggering story of how she decided to leave her much-loved job as infant teacher in a local Catholic school and become involved in the live-saving project. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The ‘Sound of Many Waters’ vigil of reconciliation and reflection for creation, attracted a wide variety of people to Clifton Cathedral. The Cathedral proved an atmospheric setting for this unique event which helped people think about our relationship with the natural world.

Father Chris Boles SJ led people as they reflected upon different aspects of nature.

Superb music helped the congregation contemplate the issues facing the earth and moments of silence allowed the time and space for people to personally consider their actions and to make their own prayers.

An array of images was projected on to the walls of the Cathedral. Much of the footage came courtesy of the BBC Natural History Unit.

Many pictures of the evening can be viewed in the image panel on the right. You can also listen to and download our podcast in which we speak with Mary Colwell, the inspiration behind ‘Sound of Many Waters’. Cath McCarthy, the Chair of the Cathedral Pastoral Council and Mary's dad also spoke with us just before the vigil got underway. </itunes:summary>
