DOWNSIDE ABBEY Catholic Social Teaching Retreat
All services are in the Abbey Church, unless indicated otherwise. Meals are in the Weld Refectory.
FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2018
From 5pm Arrival at Abbey Visitor Centre, refreshments and registration. There will be a “running” buffet for supper.
8 pm Compline, followed by Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament in the Crypt Chapel.
A Priest will be available in the Confessional to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation between 8 – 9 pm. However, please approach any of the Priests at any time during the Retreat if you wish to make your Reconciliation.
9.15 pm Introductions, and outline of the Retreat in the Gasquet Hall.
10 pm Hot Chocolate and cookies in the Weld
SATURDAY 17 February 2017
6am Vigils (Optional!)
7.10 am Lauds, followed by breakfast
9.30 am, or after Mass, refreshments in the Weld
10 am Talk by Hugh Walters, Head of Theology, Downside School
The Four Main Principles of Catholic Social Teaching:
- a) The Dignity of the Human Person and the Common Good
- b) Subsidiarity and Solidarity
12.30 pm Midday Office
1 pm Lunch
2.00 pm am Talk by Hugh Walters, Head of Theology, Downside School
British Values and Catholic Social Teaching- is there a conflict?
3.30 pm Break
4.00 pm Talk by Jacob Rees-Mogg MP

9 pm Social time in Plunkett, with hot chocolate and cookies, and some board and card games!

“Living out Catholic Social Teaching- some historical and current examples”

2.30 pm Talk by Anne and Peter Barrett “The Camino Portuguese: Training, equipment and the spiritual experience” Anne and Peter, have walked the Portuguese twice, and thoroughly recommend it. They will be able to tell you all that you need to know!
4 pm End of Retreat.
